IN THE PRESS
Houston Press Review: “It’s a love letter to vulnerability, communication, the power of being seen and the importance of reaching out. Under the tender, patiently timed direction of Christy Watkins, with superlative performances by Faith Fossett (Katie) and Orlanda Arriaga (Paul), and a gorgeous diner set (Tatiana Vintu), this is a stellar production in what has already been a standout season for 4th Wall Theatre.”
Broadway World Review: “In the capable hands of Fossett and Arriaga, under Watkins’ thoughtful direction, the production embraces stillness, nuance, and emotional honesty. It asks us to lean in, to listen closely, and to sit with uncertainty…much like the characters themselves.”
Car Takes Review: “Beautifully directed by Christy Watkins - it’s a quiet play and it reminded me of a classic, very cerebral episode of The Twilight Zone because it’s a normal life going along and then an element is introduced that changes everything.”
Houston Press Artist Interview: "It’s [a play] about overcoming grief and how important it is to reach out and not isolate yourself. Sometimes we think we need to shelter ourselves away to protect ourselves from becoming hurt again, but we end up doing more damage. And how important it is to reach out and connect with other people.” - Actor Faith Fossett on THE COUNTER
Broadway World Artist Interview: “I live for these types of stories! I don’t think I’m out of the norm in saying films and plays where the characters are sitting down talking to each other can be thrilling. It can be gripping, riveting and at the same time customary. When done right it’s just so interesting. … I guarantee everyone watching will think, ‘Oh these are two regular people getting to know each other,’ but when it drops they’ll say, ‘Oh, I was wrong about that!’” - Actor Orlando Arriaga on THE COUNTER
AUDIENCE RESPONSE
It was a real tour de force force for the two actors who carried the majority of the play: they effectively inhabited genuine and relatable characters, offering a poignant and relatable statement about the nature of friendship. I loved the hopeful but open ending, which leaves one thinking long beyond the play itself.
