Can genius and stability coexist?

We often romanticize brilliance, but PROOF asks us to consider the cost of extraordinary talent, not just for the person who possesses it, but for the people who love them. Catherine and Claire, the two sisters at the center of this remarkable play, must wrestle with their father’s complicated legacy of brilliance and instability. Both young women were thrust into caregiver roles at a young age. Now, in the throes of grief, they must find a way to move forward.

As the audience, we are never given an easy answer. Each time we feel a question may be answered, PROOF raises another.

Again and again, the play circles back to the question of inheritance, asking us and the characters to consider:

What has Catherine inherited from her father—his illness, his brilliance, or both? These questions sit at the heart of Catherine’s journey. Is she making a mistake by pushing Claire away, or is Claire trying to protect someone who doesn’t actually need saving? Will Hal be able to support Catherine if her path begins to mirror her father’s? Could his trust in her be the very thing she needs to move forward?

While few of us will ever struggle with the tension between true genius and instability, I think many of us struggle to find a balance between our passions, interests, our work, and having a full life. As an artist, I certainly relate to the impulse to become consumed by work, while also feeling a deep need to make space for family, relationships, and community. 

I appreciate that PROOF recognizes that this tension doesn’t have an easy solution. We all have to find a way to pursue the things that matter deeply to us while also making space for the people and relationships that make up a full life.
